Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano called out the opposing bloc in the Senate after they allegedly failed to act on the very matters they earlier claimed were being delayed.
In a press conference on June 4, Cayetano questioned why no action was taken on pending Commission on Appointments matters and urgent legislation, including the Anti-Hospital Detention Act, despite claims that there was enough quorum to proceed with Senate business.
According to Cayetano, the other side had repeatedly raised concerns that generals awaiting confirmation could be affected, and that hospital patients would suffer if key measures were not passed. But when session continued, he said the chamber still adjourned sine die without advancing those issues.
For Cayetano, this exposed what he sees as the real motive behind the recent Senate power struggle.
He said the issue is no longer just about procedure, leadership, or numbers on the floor, but about whether the Senate is being used to serve the public or to consolidate political control.
Cayetano maintained that his side is standing for what is right, while accusing the rival bloc of focusing on power instead of urgent public service.
