Alex Eala is no longer just chasing milestones for herself. The Filipina tennis star says her breakthrough year has shown her the power of representation — and how deeply one athlete’s journey can move people back home.
Speaking on CBS Mornings, Eala reflected on the support she has received from Filipinos and tennis fans who see part of their own dreams in her climb. The world No. 18 said hearing the stories of people inspired by her career has been one of the most meaningful parts of her rise.
Eala’s message was simple but powerful: dreams become real when someone proves they can be reached. “I’m here. I’m in New York. I’m competing in the US Open. I’m from Manila,” she said, adding that a dream remains only a dream until it becomes reality.
At 21, Eala has already become the highest-ranked Filipina in WTA history and reached the fourth round of Wimbledon this year, pushing Philippine tennis onto stages where Filipino athletes have rarely stood. Her US Open campaign ended in the third round against Iva Jovic, but the larger story remains intact: Eala has changed what young Filipino tennis players can imagine for themselves.
She is set to continue her season at the Singapore Tennis Open as she begins her Asian swing before the Asian Games, where another opportunity awaits to carry the Philippine flag. For Eala, the scoreboard is no longer measured only in wins and rankings — it is also measured in the young athletes now thinking, maybe this dream can be mine too.
