Rain or Shine came into the PBA Season 50 Commissionerโ€™s Cup looking untouchableโ€”seven straight wins, record-level scoring, and a pace that kept teams chasing shadows. Then Phoenix showed up and did what most couldnโ€™t: they slowed the game down and made Rain or Shine work in the halfcourt, handing the Elasto Painters their first loss, 87โ€“83, via a gritty comeback win.

Phoenix head coach Charles Tiu admitted he was worried about how to stop a team that had been winning even without an import in earlier gamesโ€”but the Fuel Masters made their priority clear: defense first, sprint prevention second. The game plan leaned on solid one-on-one defense and taking away easy running opportunities, especially after misses.

The clearest โ€œstat proofโ€ of Phoenixโ€™s clamp: Rain or Shine import Jaylen Johnsonโ€”normally a major weaponโ€”was held to 12 points on a brutal 5-of-25 shooting night. As a team, Rain or Shine was limited to 17 fastbreak points and nine three-pointers, cutting down two of their biggest offensive engines: pace + long-range damage.

And once Phoenix finally started knocking down shots in the second half, the chain reaction hitโ€”fewer long rebounds, fewer runouts, fewer quick buckets. Down as much as 18, Phoenix dug in, stayed composed, and finished the job. Tiu said the win was also a reminder of Phoenixโ€™s ceiling: when the effort and focus are there, they can compete with anyone.
