MANILA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. made a striking admission on Wednesday, acknowledging the presence of corruption within the government following the escape of dismissed Bamban Mayor Alice Guo. He announced that a “full-scale investigation” is underway, vowing that those responsible will face severe consequences.
In a statement shared on social media, Marcos expressed concern over how Guo’s departure has exposed the “corruption that undermines our justice system and erodes public trust.”
“Let me be clear: Heads will roll,” Marcos declared, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
“We will identify and expose the individuals who have betrayed the people’s trust and facilitated her escape. A comprehensive investigation is already in progress, and those involved will be suspended and held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” he added.
Guo, who is under investigation for her alleged involvement in illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) and questions surrounding her citizenship, managed to leave the country on July 18, despite being on an immigration lookout bulletin.
The President’s acknowledgment of corruption within the ranks of government is a rare admission from the administration, raising questions about the extent of the issue and the effectiveness of current anti-corruption measures.
“There is no room in this government for anyone who prioritizes personal interest over serving the Filipino people with honor, integrity, and justice,” Marcos said, signaling a strong stance against those who compromise public service.
On Tuesday, Malacañang ordered the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Justice to revoke the passports of Guo and her family.
