Classes in Manila were suspended at all levels on Thursday, July 2, 2026, after the Iglesia ni Cristo protest was expected to move to Liwasang Bonifacio, a designated Freedom Park in the city.
Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso announced the suspension for both public and private schools, citing the anticipated crowd movement and security preparations around the protest site. The decision was made as local authorities prepared for the possible impact of the assembly on traffic, mobility, and public order in the area.
The transfer to Manila came after the protest program along EDSA in Quezon City ended Wednesday night, following the expiration of the rally permit earlier granted by the Quezon City government. Participants were instructed to leave the area, clean up, and bring their trash with them before moving out.
Manila City Administrator Atty. Eduardo “Wardee” Quintos XIV earlier clarified that protesters do not need a permit to assemble at Liwasang Bonifacio because it is a government-designated Freedom Park. An INC minister also informed participants that the next program would continue there, where peaceful assembly is allowed without securing a separate permit.
The suspension shows how quickly a major protest can affect city operations, especially when large crowds shift from one key Metro Manila area to another.
