Flood control structure boosts livelihood activities in Marinduque

MANILA – Riverside residents in Barangay Bamban, Boac, Marinduque have seen substantial improvement in their daily activities following the completion of a flood control structure by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) that aims to alleviate the severe impact of recurring flooding in the community.

In a report to Secretary Manuel Bonoan, DPWH Region 4-B (Mimaropa) Director Gerald Pacanan said the completed protection structure was expected to significantly help in augmenting the livelihood activities in the village, primarily in farming, which is the primary source of income in the area.

“The flood mitigation project is a comprehensive measure in reinforcing disaster resiliency while assuring residents their safety and security against flooding that has been causing serious damage to properties, livestock and crops for many years,” Pacanan said in a media release on Wednesday.

Implemented by the DPWH Marinduque District Engineering Office, the completed project involves the construction of 385-lineal meter revetment wall with steel sheet piles, fostering the long-term sustainability of the structure from bad weather conditions.

Costing PHP67.54 million, the flood control project was funded under the General Appropriations Act of 2024. (PNA)
