WHO warning vs. Nipah virus

The world is once again teetering on the edge of a health crisis as the Nipah virus begins to spread in parts of India. This alarming development has prompted the World Health Organization to issue an urgent warning about its potential to escalate into a global pandemic, reminiscent of the Covid-19 crisis that affected us all just a few years ago.
Nipah is recognized as one of the deadliest viruses, with fatality rates ranging from 40% to 75%. If this virus were to reach the Philippines, the consequences could be far more devastating than the health challenges we faced three or four years ago.
As a zoonotic disease, Nipah can easily leap from animals to humans, primarily through bats or contaminated food. Those most at risk are the impoverished populations living in slum communities and esteros, who often rely on contaminated sources for their sustenance.
