Rain or Shine came into the PBA Season 50 Commissionerโs Cup looking untouchableโseven straight wins, record-level scoring, and a pace that kept teams chasing shadows. Then Phoenix showed up and did what most couldnโt: they slowed the game down and made Rain or Shine work in the halfcourt, handing the Elasto Painters their first loss, 87โ83, via a gritty comeback win.
Phoenix head coach Charles Tiu admitted he was worried about how to stop a team that had been winning even without an import in earlier gamesโbut the Fuel Masters made their priority clear: defense first, sprint prevention second. The game plan leaned on solid one-on-one defense and taking away easy running opportunities, especially after misses.
The clearest โstat proofโ of Phoenixโs clamp: Rain or Shine import Jaylen Johnsonโnormally a major weaponโwas held to 12 points on a brutal 5-of-25 shooting night. As a team, Rain or Shine was limited to 17 fastbreak points and nine three-pointers, cutting down two of their biggest offensive engines: pace + long-range damage.
And once Phoenix finally started knocking down shots in the second half, the chain reaction hitโfewer long rebounds, fewer runouts, fewer quick buckets. Down as much as 18, Phoenix dug in, stayed composed, and finished the job. Tiu said the win was also a reminder of Phoenixโs ceiling: when the effort and focus are there, they can compete with anyone.
