Western Visayas cops tighten security for First Lady amid threats

The Police Regional Office 6 (Western Visayas) has enhanced security measures for First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos following recent threats, according to Brig. Gen. Jack Wanky, the region’s police director.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Wanky emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of the First Lady, who frequently visits Iloilo for various engagements. “That is our work—to secure them. We will add more security,” Wanky said, referencing an online statement by Vice President Sara Duterte over the weekend, which included a controversial threat against the First Family.

The police director assured the public that the Western Visayas police force will closely coordinate with the Presidential Security Command to bolster security arrangements for the First Family during their visits to the region. “Whatever their requirement, we are just here to support,” Wanky added.

First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos has been a regular presence in Iloilo, most notably during the groundbreaking ceremony of the West Visayas State University College of Law building in January 2024. Her engagements in the region have made her a prominent figure, prompting heightened vigilance by local authorities.

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas also addressed the matter, urging national leaders to prioritize dialogue and unity. In a statement, he called for peaceful resolutions to political differences, emphasizing the importance of advancing initiatives that benefit the country.

The Western Visayas police force reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and order while supporting national efforts to ensure the safety of government officials and their families.
