The Police Regional Office in Bicol (PRO-5) reported a peaceful New Year celebration across the region, with minimal incidents related to firecrackers.

In a statement on Wednesday, PRO-5 Director Brig. Gen. Andre Dizon attributed the success to comprehensive security preparations and the proactive cooperation of the community. He highlighted that the heightened alert status of Bicol police, deployment of additional officers, intensified patrolling, and increased visibility in public spaces significantly contributed to maintaining peace and order.

The region recorded 30 firecracker-related injuries, with Albay logging the highest number of incidents at 12, followed by Camarines Norte with nine, Camarines Sur with seven, and Masbate and Naga City each reporting one incident. Despite the traditional use of fireworks, the region reported no fire incidents caused by firecrackers and no casualties from stray bullets or illegal firearm discharges.

As part of a region-wide operation against illegal firecrackers, authorities confiscated 1,657 improvised “boga,” often made from PVC pipes, and 3,433 other types of unauthorized firecrackers. Dizon noted that these efforts not only reduced the risk of injuries but also emphasized the importance of using safe and legal alternatives for celebrations.

Dizon expressed gratitude to the public, local government units, and community stakeholders for their cooperation during the holiday period, emphasizing that the peaceful outcome demonstrated the effectiveness of collaboration between law enforcement and the community.
