NBI investigates pet crematorium as senators seek wider scrutiny

The National Bureau of Investigation is examining whether a Cavite pet crematorium deceived customers after animal remains were discovered dumped in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan.

NBI Director Melvin Matibag ordered the investigation into Bacoor-based Ahjay Paws Aftercare Pet Crematorium on November 2. Investigators will examine business records, equipment, surveillance footage and documents showing how animals’ remains were handled.

Reports have carried differing counts: initial accounts cited 29 animals, while The Philippine Star’s November 3 report put the number at 25. Additional suspected dumping sites have also been reported.

The bureau urged affected owners to submit payment receipts, cremation certificates and communications with the establishment.

Sen. Pia Cayetano announced plans for a resolution seeking a legislative inquiry. Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian called for inspections of pet service providers nationwide, while Sen. Francis Pangilinan sought accountability and stronger protections.

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society also urged a broader investigation into crematorium operations. Possible charges remain subject to the evidence gathered.
