The International Criminal Court expects former president Rodrigo Duterte to attend his trial daily when proceedings on crimes against humanity charges begin on November 30.
Presiding Judge Joanna Korner conveyed the requirement during a pre-trial status conference on November 2, according to a Philippine Star report carried by OneNews.
Duterte was permitted to miss Monday’s conference because it was expected to be brief. His lawyer, Peter Haynes, acknowledged the court’s expectation that he attend the trial proper.
The court outlined four daily hearing sessions, separated by regular breaks recommended by medical experts who examined the former president.
Monday’s conference was the final scheduled preparatory hearing before the trial opens. Much of the discussion took place in private, with the agenda covering witnesses, recorded testimony, protective measures and the presentation of evidence.
The judges also declined a request to use Tagalog during portions of the victims’ opening statement, while providing for interpretation and a translated transcript.
