Marcos congratulates Albanese on re-election, reaffirms strong PH-Australia ties

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Wednesday extended his congratulations to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese following his re-election, calling the victory a testament to the Australian people’s confidence in his leadership.

In a video message posted on his official X account, Marcos referred to Albanese as a “friend” and praised his continued public service. “This renewed mandate speaks volumes of the trust and confidence your people have in your leadership. And I have no doubt you shall carry it forward with the same resolve and vision that you have long defined in your public service,” he said.

Marcos also emphasized the growing ties between the Philippines and Australia, which were elevated to a strategic partnership in September 2023. “The ties between our countries have grown stronger, anchored not just in same values but in genuine friendship,” he said.

The president hinted at a potential future meeting with Albanese, saying, “Perhaps, this is a sign that it’s time for another visit. I look forward to our next conversation, whether it’s over a flat white down under or a rich cup of tsokolate here in Old Manila.”

During Albanese’s visit to the Philippines in September 2023—the first by an Australian Prime Minister in two decades—the two leaders signed the Joint Declaration on Strategic Partnership. The agreement laid the groundwork for expanded cooperation in defense, economy, education, and climate initiatives.

The visit also resulted in two memoranda of understanding: one for a work and holiday visa arrangement, enabling youth exchanges between the two nations; and another for a soil health cooperation initiative, focused on joint research, expert exchanges, and science-driven policy support.
