LEGAZPI CITY – Classes at all levels in Albay, Sorsogon, and Camarines Sur were suspended on Friday due to heavy rains that could trigger floods and landslides.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued a Heavy Rainfall Warning for the three provinces due to the southwest monsoon and the trough of Severe Tropical Storm Bebinca.
Camarines Sur Governor Vincenzo Renato Luigi Villafuerte released a memorandum suspending classes in all 35 towns and two cities of the province.
“The province of Camarines Sur is experiencing moderate to heavy rainfall due to the southwest monsoon. Heavy rainfall is expected until Saturday afternoon (Sept. 14). For the safety of students and the general public, classes at all levels, both in public and private schools, are suspended today, Sept. 13,” Villafuerte said.
He also warned of potential flooding and rain-induced landslides, particularly in areas highly susceptible to these hazards, posing a significant risk to public safety.
Albay Governor Edcel Grex Lagman, in a social media post, urged residents to remain attentive to local advisories issued by municipal and city officials as the bad weather persists.
In Sorsogon, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) confirmed the suspension of classes, prioritizing the safety and well-being of students and the public. The PDRRMO instructed all local DRRMOs to implement disaster preparedness measures, closely monitor vulnerable areas, and ensure an appropriate and timely response.
“DRRMOs are advised to review and activate contingency plans as needed and ensure the timely dissemination of public safety information regarding all precautionary measures,” the advisory stated.
PAGASA’s Heavy Rainfall Warning was issued at 5 a.m., forecasting continued rains throughout the day.
