DOT’s Philippine Experience Program showcases Butuan, Agusan tourism

BUTUAN CITY – The Department of Tourism (DOT) launched the October 28-30 Philippine Experience Program (PEP) on Monday, aiming to boost tourism in this city and the Agusan provinces.

The program, spearheaded by DOT Secretary Christina Frasco, highlights the Philippines’ rich cultural heritage.

“This milestone event for the Caraga Region promotes our lesser-known destinations,” DOT-13 Regional Director Ivonnie Dumadag said at the opening.

DOT Undersecretaries Maria Rica Bueno, Verna Esmeralda Covar Buensuceso, and Myrna Paz Abubakar attended the launch, with Secretary Frasco and international representatives expected for the program’s second day.

The delegation toured Butuan’s archaeological sites, including the historic Balangay boat at the Butuan Archaeological Park and the National Museum’s artifact collection.

The Balangay, a centuries-old wooden vessel, represents Butuan’s early trade culture and craftsmanship. They also visited Barangay Bading’s boat-making site, where the historic boat is still reproduced.

The three-day event will also feature tourism sites in Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte, and Bayugan City, Agusan del Sur, with media and influencers from Manila, Cebu, and Caraga joining the PEP tour. (PNA)
