The Coast Guard Station Northern Negros Occidental (CGS NNOC), in collaboration with local groups, conducted a river clean-up and medical mission in Barangay 8, Bacolod City, on Saturday, November 30. The dual-purpose initiative addressed environmental and health concerns, focusing on underserved populations in the area.
The event was spearheaded by the 618th Squadron of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) under the leadership of Auxiliary Commodore Dannyl N. Yap. The medical mission offered free services, including Sagip Mata (Eye Rescue) consultations and diabetes awareness education. The eye consultations benefited older adults by identifying and addressing common vision problems, while the diabetes awareness program provided essential information on prevention and management of the condition.
Simultaneously, the river clean-up targeted the removal of trash, plastic waste, and other debris from the riverbanks. Coast Guard personnel, along with local volunteers, participated in the effort to restore the health of the waterway and prevent further environmental degradation. This initiative aimed to improve water quality and protect the ecosystem, highlighting the significance of maintaining clean waterways in urban areas like Bacolod City.
The collaboration between the Coast Guard, Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary (PCGA), and community members emphasized the importance of addressing environmental and public health challenges through comprehensive and sustainable actions. The clean-up and medical mission showcased the Coast Guard’s commitment to community welfare, extending its role beyond maritime safety to humanitarian and environmental restoration efforts.
