On December 30, 2024, the City of Taguig commemorated the 128th anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal’s martyrdom with a solemn ceremony at the Taguig City Hall grounds. Mayor Lani Cayetano, accompanied by city officials, led a wreath-laying ceremony to honor the national hero’s enduring legacy.
Dr. Jose Rizal, executed on December 30, 1896, in Bagumbayan (now Luneta Park), is celebrated for his pivotal role in the Philippine reform movement during the Spanish colonial period. His literary works, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, exposed societal injustices and inspired a national movement towards independence.
The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) organized nationwide activities to mark this significant day, including flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremonies in Manila, Calamba, and Dapitan. A special exhibit titled “Remembering Rizal in Artworks and Monuments” was also unveiled, featuring artworks that immortalize Dr. Rizal’s contributions to the nation’s history.Â
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. led the main commemoration at Rizal Park in Manila, emphasizing Rizal’s vision of a just society and its relevance to contemporary times. He urged Filipinos to embody the national hero’s ideals in their daily lives.
