A safe haven for young minds

In a world filled with distractions and digital devices, nurturing a love for reading and learning in young minds has become more important than ever.

The Dagupan City government led by Mayor Belen Fernandez, through the City Library, has opened a dedicated Reading Nook at the city’s popular mall, the CSI Mall in Barangay Lucao in a remarkable initiative aimed at promoting reading among children.

This exciting project is not just a place for children to read—it’s an immersive educational experience that blends literature, play, creativity, and storytelling in a way that appeals to young hearts and minds.

The Reading Nook opened on November 7 on the second floor of CSI Dagupan owned by the family of Mayor Fernandez.

Ruby Flores, who works at the E-Library of Dagupan City said this Reading Nook is for everyone, especially for the kids “ especially that they are already into gadgets… so, they already forget about the importance of books ”.

Judy Ann Cayetano, Librarian 1 at the City Library, said that the Reading Nook is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday to Sunday.

The officer-in-charge of the City Library , Marilyn Caguioa, assigns personnel by shifting system, augmented by those in E-Library and Barangay Libarians, to assist their young clients.

Cayetano said the children’s older companions have their corner too and can read newspapers, magazines and other reading materials while waiting for them.

The kids can also be left by their moms for an hour or two at the Reading Nook while their mothers do their shopping or buy their grocery needs. They may opt to just sit there in another area and enjoy reading as well.

Asked about parents’ initial reaction upon seeing and using the Reading Nook, Cayetano said they are amazed and happy because it’s free. “ They don’t have to pay anything,” Cayetano said.

Mayor Fernandez, who has consistently prioritized education and the empowerment of the youth throughout her tenure, is also a strong advocate for accessible learning. She sees the Reading Nook as a valuable tool in ensuring that children have not only a safe space to read, but also a fun, engaging environment that fosters curiosity and creativity.

“Education is the foundation for a better future, and our kids deserve every opportunity to learn and grow,” Mayor Fernandez said.

“By setting up a space like this in a central location, we are bringing learning to them in a way that’s both exciting and accessible. Reading is just the start—this is about creating a well-rounded experience that encourages imagination and learning in all its forms,” she added.

At the Reading Nook, children experience a multifaceted educational experience, packed with activities designed to entertain and educate in equal measure.

It also has storytelling sessions, a play area, drawing and arts corner and educational games.

“I want to ensure that every child in Dagupan has the chance to develop their potential,” Mayor Fernandez said.

She added, “This is just one of the many projects we have in the works to make education more accessible, enjoyable, and impactful.”

For children, the Reading Nook is more than just a place to read—it’s an introduction to the joys of learning, a space that nurtures their curiosity and fosters a sense of discovery. For parents and caregivers, it’s a place where they can rest easy, knowing that their child is not only entertained but also growing intellectually and socially.

In a mall designed for shopping and entertainment, the Dagupan City Reading Nook stands as a reminder of the power of books, the joy of reading, and the bright future of a generation empowered through education.
