By Sam Ramos

A total of 7, 459 Grade 4 female students in the Caraga region have received their vaccinations against the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is a leading cause of cervical cancer. The Department of Health (DOH-13) reported that these vaccinations were part of a school-based immunization campaign conducted across various schools in the region.

The vaccination initiative targeted Grade 4 students before their exposure to HPV, significantly reducing their future risk of developing cervical cancer. The highest vaccination numbers were reported in Agusan del Sur (1, 723 girls), Surigao del Sur (1, 410), and Butuan City (2, 573). The campaign also saw support from the Department of Education’s division offices.

The DOH-13 emphasized the importance of this campaign and intends to continue protecting more young girls from cervical cancer in the future.
