The world unites today to mark the 29th anniversary of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims, an annual observance dedicated to honoring those who have lost their lives in road traffic incidents and to advocating for improved road safety measures. Held on the third Sunday of November, this global event highlights the devastating consequences of road crashes and serves as a call to action to prevent further loss of life.
In the Philippines, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) Region 7 joins the commemoration, reinforcing its commitment to reducing road fatalities in Central Visayas. Collaborating with local government units, road safety advocates, and other stakeholders, the agency has organized activities aimed at promoting safe driving practices, educating the public on traffic regulations, and paying tribute to victims and their families.
Globally, road traffic accidents claim over 1.3 million lives annually, with millions more suffering serious injuries, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Alarmingly, traffic crashes are now the leading cause of death among individuals aged 5 to 29. In the Philippines, road crash fatalities remain a critical concern, with the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reporting more than 12, 000 deaths in 2021, placing the country 13th in the global ranking for road traffic deaths.
In Region 7, which includes bustling cities such as Cebu, Mandaue, and Dumaguete, road safety initiatives have become increasingly urgent. The LTO Region 7 has implemented stricter licensing procedures, intensified traffic law enforcement, and launched public awareness campaigns. Efforts have also been made to curb the use of unregistered vehicles, promote proper helmet and seatbelt usage, and combat driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
To observe the World Day of Remembrance, the LTO Region 7 has scheduled various events, including educational drives in schools and universities, community outreach activities, and distribution of informational materials on road safety. These initiatives aim to foster a culture of responsible driving and to reduce road-related injuries and fatalities.
In Cebu City, memorial events will feature candlelight vigils, moments of silence, and the recitation of names of road crash victims. Families, local officials, and road safety advocates will gather to honor the memory of those lost and to advocate for safer streets. The commemoration underscores the enduring impact of road crashes on individuals, families, and communities.
