Cases of violence against women (VAW) in Negros Oriental decreased slightly during the first 10 months of 2024, reflecting the impact of intensified government and private sector interventions and improved public awareness.
The Women and Children’s Protection Desk (WCPD) of the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office (NOPPO) reported 369 VAW cases from January to October this year, compared to 386 cases recorded in the same period in 2023.
Capt. Helen Grace Aldirete, WCPD provincial chief, stated that police efforts led to the arrest of 24 suspects, with cases filed against them. Of the total cases, 366 were cleared or solved, while three remain under investigation.
Among the six cities in the province, Dumaguete City recorded the highest number of cases at 27, followed by Guihulngan City with 12, Tanjay and Canlaon Cities with eight each, Bais City with seven, and Bayawan City with six. Among municipalities, Bacong registered the highest number of cases at 62, while Vallehermoso had the lowest with one.
To combat gender-based violence, NOPPO has ramped up its initiatives, including social media campaigns to disseminate information on Republic Act 9262, also known as the Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) law. Police stations have dedicated WCPD social media accounts, while officers conduct dialogues, consultations, and distribute informational materials in schools, markets, and other public places. They also host radio programs to reach wider audiences.
Aldirete emphasized that continued public education and collaboration with stakeholders remain key to reducing violence against women in the province.
