The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), through its Assistance for Security, Peace, Integration, and Recovery (Aspire) project, provided livelihood packages to 700 individuals in Basilan as part of ongoing efforts to address the issue of loose firearms under the Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) Management Program. The distribution took place on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at the Basilan Provincial Capitol in Isabela City.
According to the 101st Infantry Brigade (101Bde), the identified recipients of the livelihood packages were SALW owners whose firearms had been stenciled. Of the 700 beneficiaries, 29 who surrendered their SALWs received motorcycles, while the rest were provided with food packs, sacks of rice, and hygiene kits.
The 101Bde, in collaboration with the Basilan Provincial Government, facilitated the handover of the livelihood interventions. This initiative underscores a shared commitment to peace, with the active participation of the provincial government, local leaders, and the broader Basilan community. The successful implementation of the project highlights the efforts to promote security and socio-economic development in the province.
The ceremony was attended by key representatives from the military, the provincial government, the Joint Normalization Committee, and the UNDP. Brigadier General Alvin Luzon, commander of the 101Bde, emphasized the importance of initiatives like this in reducing weapons-related violence and fostering sustainable development. The 101Bde reiterated its dedication to supporting projects aimed at enhancing peace and security in Basilan.
This distribution of livelihood packages not only helps address the issue of loose firearms but also contributes to improving the living conditions of the beneficiaries and their families, reflecting a holistic approach to achieving lasting peace in the region.
