US President Donald Trump has publicly backed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of Israel’s October 27 parliamentary election, giving his longtime political ally a significant endorsement as he fights to retain power in one of the country’s most closely contested elections.
In a statement posted on Truth Social on Sunday, October 18, Trump praised Netanyahu’s leadership during Israel’s military confrontations with Iran and other regional adversaries, describing him as a dependable partner for Washington. The US president offered his “complete and total endorsement” and warned Israeli voters that replacing Netanyahu could leave the United States carrying a greater burden in confronting Iran.
Netanyahu welcomed the endorsement and quickly made it part of his reelection campaign. The Israeli leader emphasized his close working relationship with Trump, arguing that their cooperation had produced major military gains against Iran and that another term would allow them to finish their remaining security objectives. The appeal places national defense and the US-Israel alliance at the center of Netanyahu’s campaign.
However, the race remains highly competitive. Netanyahu faces a major challenge from Gadi Eisenkot, a former Israeli military chief and leader of the center-right Yashar party. Opposition figures have questioned Netanyahu’s handling of the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack, accusing his government of failing to prevent the assault. Netanyahu also continues to face longstanding corruption proceedings and criticism over his administration’s approach to the Gaza war.
Eisenkot responded to Trump’s intervention by stressing that Israel’s political future must ultimately be determined by its own citizens. While acknowledging the importance of the American president, he maintained that Israeli voters alone have the authority to choose their government, placing democratic independence at the forefront of the opposition’s response.
The election could prove difficult for either side to win outright. Recent polling suggests that neither Netanyahu’s governing bloc nor the opposition has secured a clear path to the 61 seats required to command a majority in Israel’s 120-member parliament. Even if Netanyahu’s Likud party performs strongly, his ability to remain prime minister may depend on post-election coalition negotiations.
Trump’s endorsement also arrives amid continuing uncertainty over the Middle East conflict. The two leaders have worked closely on military operations against Iran, although differences have emerged over the possibility of a negotiated settlement. The conflict has disrupted regional security and global energy markets, making Israel’s next government consequential far beyond its borders.
With roughly seven million Israelis eligible to vote, the October 27 election will determine whether Netanyahu receives another mandate or whether the country moves toward a different political leadership. Trump’s intervention may strengthen Netanyahu’s campaign, but the result will ultimately depend on Israeli voters and the parties capable of forming a governing coalition.
