QC extends ‘car-free Sundays’ for health, sustainability

MANILA – Quezon City will continue its “Car-Free, Carefree Sundays” along portions of Tomas Morato Avenue, promoting active mobility and creating a vibrant space for recreation, the local government announced on Monday.

Mayor Joy Belmonte emphasized that the initiative aligns with the city’s vision of a sustainable and people-centered urban environment.

“We aim to encourage outdoor activities, support healthy lifestyles and advance our commitment to environmental sustainability,” Belmonte said in a statement.

The program, which started on December 8, 2024, is based on Ordinance No. SP-3345, S-2024.

It closes a section of Tomas Morato Avenue from Timog Avenue to Roces Avenue on designated Sundayss for pedestrians, joggers and cyclists.

A rerouting scheme ensures smooth flow for motorists.

Phase 1 takes place every first Sunday of the month from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Phase 2 expands the closures to additional Sundays after a year.
