PHILTA Stands Behind Alex Eala After Recent Losses, Backs Filipina Star to Regain Momentum

The Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA) has reaffirmed its full support for Alex Eala, emphasizing that a difficult stretch on the court does not erase the milestones she has achieved for Philippine tennis.

Currently ranked World No. 19, the 21-year-old Filipina is looking to regain her momentum after consecutive early exits in the Singapore Open and Wuhan Open, along with a semifinal defeat at the 2026 Asian Games. The results have marked an unusual setback for Eala following a breakthrough season that saw her establish herself among the world’s top players.

Eala’s recent campaign included a Round of 16 loss to Russia’s Tatiana Prozorova in Singapore before another upset against China’s Shi Han in the opening round at Wuhan. At the Asian Games in Japan, she also fell short of the gold medal after losing to Wang Xiyu in the semifinals, ultimately securing another bronze medal for the Philippines.

Despite the disappointing results, PHILTA Secretary-General John Rey Tiangco stressed that Eala’s development should be measured beyond individual tournament outcomes. Her historic Washington Open championship, career-high No. 18 WTA ranking, and victories over established international stars have already elevated the Philippines’ standing in professional tennis.

The association also commended Eala for prioritizing national representation at the Asian Games, recognizing her decision to compete for the Philippines despite other opportunities on the professional circuit. PHILTA maintained that her dedication, discipline, and willingness to continue improving remain central to her long-term success.

Eala is now preparing for two important tournaments to close out October. She is scheduled to compete at the Ningbo Open in China beginning October 19, followed by her anticipated debut at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, running from October 26 to November 1.

For Eala, the challenge is to rediscover the consistency that powered her remarkable climb through the rankings. For PHILTA, however, confidence in the Filipina remains firm. Her recent defeats may have slowed her momentum, but her accomplishments have already helped bring Philippine tennis to a level of international attention rarely seen before.

With more tournaments ahead, Eala has another opportunity to prove that a difficult stretch is only one part of a much larger career.
