MANILA – The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) on Thursday said it expects no passenger congestion in ports this holiday season due to the preparation and increased cooperation between shipping lines and the government.
“Walang nakikitang pagsisikip sa mga pantalan ngayong holiday season (We expect no congestion in ports this holiday season),” said PPA General Manager Jay Santiago in a statement.
All Port Management Offices (PMOs) under the PPA were ordered to implement full manpower and a “no leave policy” for their frontline workers.
“’Yung mga terminals natin ay nakipag-ugnayan na sa mga shipping lines para masigurado ‘yung mga schedule ng mga barko (Our terminals have coordinated with shipping lines to ensure the schedule of our ships),” Santiago said.
He added that these terminals and shipping lines also coordinate with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA).
“Even if there is a weather disturbance, we’re prepared. Our terminal personnel are aware of what they should do and what assistance they should extend to stranded passengers,” he said.
In addition, he warned passengers to be alert against scammers, especially those offering travel insurance as it is not mandatory.
He also advised passengers to refrain from bringing prohibited items such as flammable materials, bladed weapons, and alcoholic drinks.
On Wednesday, the PPA said a total of 4.5 million passengers are expected to travel through its ports during the holiday season, specifically from December 22, 2024 to January 3, 2025.
It noted that the estimate is higher than last year due to many sea passengers failing to travel back in November due to subsequent typhoons. (PNA)
