Manila Water has embarked on a major wastewater project worth P1.6 billion to expand sewer coverage in San Mateo and Rodriguez, Rizal. The San Mateo-Rodriguez Sewerage System Package 1A (SMR P1A-SM), which began construction in January 2024, is expected to improve sanitation services and benefit over 700,000 residents by the third quarter of 2026. This initiative is part of a larger effort to bolster wastewater management in the East Zone of Metro Manila, contributing to public health and environmental protection.
The project involves the installation of over 6 kilometers of sewer lines along General A. Luna Street in San Mateo using advanced construction techniques like open-cut excavation, horizontal directional drilling (HDD), and micro-tunneling. This extensive network will use various pipe materials such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and glass fiber-reinforced plastic (GRP) to ensure durability.
According to Manila Water’s Corporate Communication Affairs Group Director, Jeric Sevilla, this infrastructure development underscores the company’s dedication to improving wastewater management and contributing to cleaner waterways, ultimately benefiting public health.
This project will particularly serve residents from barangays Sta. Ana, Guitnang Bayan I & II, Dulong Bayan I & II, Malanday, Guinayang, and Maly, and is part of Manila Water’s broader mission to enhance sanitation across the region.
The completion of the project is set for Q3 2026, aligning with Manila Water’s long-term goals for sustainable urban development and environmental preservation in the East Zone.
