IN YOUR CORNER: Kanlaon Remains Under Alert Level 2 After Four Volcanic Quakes, 48-Minute Tremor
Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island continues to show signs of unrest after recording four volcanic earthquakes, including a tremor lasting 48 minutes, prompting authorities to maintain strict safety restrictions around the volcano.
In its October 18, 2026 bulletin, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported continued seismic activity beneath Kanlaon, which remains under Alert Level 2, indicating increased volcanic unrest. Although the number of recorded earthquakes was lower than the previous day’s six, monitoring data showed that volcanic activity has not returned to normal.
The volcano also released approximately 1,605 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on October 17, while a thick plume rose about 300 meters above the summit and drifted toward the south, south-southwest, and southwest. PHIVOLCS continued to detect swelling of the volcanic edifice, interrupted by short periods of deflation, indicating ongoing changes in pressure and movement within the volcanic system.
Under Alert Level 2, sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions remain possible, even without a prolonged buildup of visible activity. PHIVOLCS also warned that signs of magmatic activity could develop, requiring continued monitoring of earthquakes, gas emissions, and ground deformation.
Authorities reiterated that entry into Kanlaon’s four-kilometer-radius Permanent Danger Zone is strictly prohibited. Aircraft are likewise barred from flying close to the volcano because of the potential danger posed by sudden eruptions and volcanic emissions.
For communities in Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, the continuing unrest reinforces the need to follow official advisories and remain prepared for changes in volcanic activity. Residents near the volcano should avoid restricted areas, monitor possible ashfall and sulfur dioxide exposure, and follow evacuation instructions if issued by local disaster authorities.
While the volcano’s alert status has not been raised, the latest observations show why precautionary measures remain necessary. Kanlaon continues to exhibit activity capable of producing sudden hazards, making timely information and compliance with safety restrictions essential for nearby communities.
