ICC prosecutor submits second batch of evidence against Duterte

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has disclosed a second batch of evidence to the legal team of former Philippine president Rodrigo R. Duterte in relation to the crimes against humanity charges filed against him.

According to a four-page document released by the Office of the Prosecutor on May 5, ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan transmitted a total of 139 documentary items to Duterte’s defense on April 30. These items are part of the case tagged as Pre-Confirmation INCRIM Packages 002, 003, and 004.

While specific details of the documents remain confidential, the prosecution noted that the new set includes evidence covering Duterte’s time as mayor of Davao City and 15 items relating to barangay-level operations during his presidency.

This follows the first batch of evidence submitted to the defense on March 24.

The materials are being disclosed ahead of a pre-trial hearing scheduled for September 23, where the court will determine whether there is enough evidence to proceed to a full trial against Duterte.

The former president is facing charges over his controversial war on drugs, which allegedly resulted in widespread extrajudicial killings during his term from 2016 to 2022.
