Coastal agencies gear up for typhoon, ‘Undas’

MANILA – The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) are on high alert for the potential impact of Tropical Depression Kristine and the expected influx of travelers for ‘Undas’ (All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days) holidays on November 1 and 2.

In a statement on Monday, PPA General Manager Jay Santiago directed all Port Management Offices (PMOs) to prepare for the effects of Kristine, which was spotted 760 kilometers east of Catarman, Northern Samar as of 5 p.m.

“To mitigate the potential impacts of the tropical depression, PMOs are required to conduct comprehensive pre-disaster risk assessments of their facilities and infrastructure. This includes identifying vulnerabilities and implementing preventive measures to safeguard against damage and disruptions,” Santiago said.

He said PMOs must coordinate with the PCG and Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (LDRRMO) and stay updated on the storm’s trajectory.

“The safety and convenience of our personnel and passengers during these critical periods are our utmost priorities,” he said.

As of noon Monday, 556 passengers are stranded at PMO Bicol ports due to canceled trips, including routes from Virac/San Andres, Catanduanes to Tabaco, Albay.

Several shipping lines from Masbate also announced canceled trips due to adverse weather conditions.

Santiago instructed PMOs to enhance the Department of Transportation Malasakit (Care) Help Desks in their respective ports to ensure the availability of assistance to passengers.

In a separate statement, PCG commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan directed all PCG operating units to be on heightened alert from October 31 to November 5.

“PCG Districts, Stations, and Sub-Stations shall intensify the safety, security, reliability, and comfort of the riding public amid Undas 2024,” Gavan said.

The PCG will dispatch K9 units and security teams to conduct inspections for maritime passengers “before, during, and after Undas.”

In addition, he said PCG medical teams will augment the help desks.

“Coast Guard rescuers and lifeguards will also be stationed in beaches, island resorts, and other coastal vacation spots to uphold public safety,” he said. (PNA)
