MANILA – The Bureau of Immigration (BI) on Monday said a Japanese national sought for prosecution in his home country for alleged involvement in phishing scams was arrested in Manila.
Yokota Tetsuya, 39, was arrested by operatives of the BI’s Fugitive Search Unit in Binondo on January 2, according to a news release on Monday
He is now awaiting repatriation at the BI detention facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City.
“He will be deported after our board of commissioners has issued the order for his summary deportation,” BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said. “He will be placed in our immigration blacklist and perpetually banned from re-entering the Philippines for being an undesirable alien.”
The BI said Tetsuya was the subject of an outstanding arrest warrant issued by a summary court in Omiya, Japan on May 31 last year.
Japanese authorities alleged that Tetsuya and his accomplices made a fraudulent phone call to their victim and falsely informed the latter that transferring the right to enter a nursing home is a crime.
The BI said the suspects deceived the victim into giving them 2.75 million yen (about USD17,000) in cash via postal mail. (PNA)
