The Department of Tourism (DOT) has pledged its full support to Bacolod City as it prepares to host the inaugural Terra Madre Salone del Gusto Asia and the Pacific in November 2024.
Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, together with Bacolod City Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez, Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, and Victorias City Mayor Javier Miguel Benitez, officially announced the city’s hosting during the 2024 Terra Madre Visayas event on Thursday, November 21, 2024.
Mayor Benitez expressed gratitude for the DOT’s support, stating that the department aims to position the Philippines as a food tourism hub.
Terra Madre is a global event focused on food politics, sustainable agriculture, and environmental conservation. The decision to host the Asia-Pacific edition in Bacolod City was made after Slow Food International Councilor Ramon Uy Jr. and Slow Food Community Negros President Doreen Alicia Gamboa invited Secretary Frasco to the 2024 Terra Madre Visayas.
Secretary Frasco emphasized the DOT’s commitment to working closely with Slow Food International to ensure the success of the event. She believes that this will not only highlight the Philippines’ diverse and delicious cuisine but also promote the principles and values of sustainable food practices.
Mayor Benitez signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Slow Food International during the Terra Madre Salone del Gusto in Turin, Italy, in September 2024 to formalize the hosting of the 2024 event.
Victorias City Mayor Javier Miguel Benitez, President of the Negros Association of Chief Executives, welcomed the opportunity to host this significant event. He believes that it will further elevate the importance of slow food practices in Negros Island and Bacolod City.
