Bacolod City shifts to e-jeepneys

By Xander Ledesma

Bacolod City has unveiled its fleet of 100% electric jeepneys, an initiative aimed at addressing air pollution and traffic congestion. The launch event on November 1, 2024, marked the city’s commitment to environmental sustainability and modern urban mobility.

The introduction of electric jeepneys aligns with Bacolod City’s broader goal of reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality. As a popular tourist destination and bustling urban center, the city has been grappling with increasing traffic congestion and air pollution. The transition to electric public transportation offers a promising solution to these challenges.

The electric jeepneys, equipped with advanced battery technology, are designed to be both environmentally friendly and economically viable. With a range of approximately 120 kilometers on a single charge, these vehicles can efficiently cover the city’s major routes, providing a reliable and affordable mode of transportation for commuters. Passengers can expect a quieter and smoother ride, free from the noise and fumes associated with traditional diesel-powered jeepneys.

The initiative has garnered support from various sectors, including environmental groups and local businesses. Community leaders emphasize the importance of such innovative solutions in combating climate change.

The adoption of electric jeepneys is part of a global trend towards sustainable urban transportation. Many cities worldwide are exploring electric vehicles to reduce emissions and improve air quality. The Philippines, recognizing the need for sustainable mobility, has been actively promoting the use of electric vehicles, particularly in public transportation.

While the transition to electric jeepneys is a positive step, challenges remain. The development of adequate charging infrastructure is essential to support the growing fleet of electric vehicles. Additionally, driver training programs are necessary to ensure the safe and efficient operation of these vehicles.

As Bacolod City embarks on this ambitious project, it sets an example for other cities in the Philippines and beyond. By embracing electric mobility, the city is not only improving its environment but also enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
