The provincial government of Negros Occidental successfully hosted the Abanse Negrense – NBTC Local Qualifying Tournament on November 24, 2024, at the Montalbo Court in Bacolod City. This highly anticipated event brought together young basketball talents from across the province to compete for a spot in the prestigious National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) League.

The tournament forms part of the Abanse Negrense program, the provincial government’s flagship initiative aimed at youth development through sports, education, and community engagement. It offers athletes aged 13 to 17 a platform to showcase their skills and aspire to compete at regional and national levels.

The event featured intense competition in both boys’ and girls’ divisions, with participants representing various schools and local government units (LGUs). The games highlighted the players’ athletic prowess, teamwork, and discipline, reinforcing the province’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of basketball stars.

Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, a staunch advocate for youth and sports development, praised the tournament for its role in empowering young athletes. “Sports serve as a powerful tool for shaping the future of our youth, teaching them values such as teamwork, perseverance, and leadership,” he said.

The Abanse Negrense program has long provided young athletes with opportunities for growth, offering access to training, mentorship, and competitions that hone their skills. Many participants in this year’s tournament view it as a stepping stone to prestigious basketball leagues such as the UAAP and NCAA, and potentially, international competitions.

Held at the well-known Montalbo Court, the tournament also served as a community event, drawing support from families, schools, and local leaders. The venue buzzed with excitement as young athletes competed passionately, demonstrating the vibrant basketball culture in Negros Occidental.

Beyond competition, the tournament emphasized character building, promoting values that extend beyond the court. Participants gained valuable life lessons, such as discipline and resilience, which will serve them well in their future endeavors, whether in sports or other fields.

Basketball holds a special place in Filipino culture, and the NBTC tournament is recognized as one of the country’s most significant grassroots sporting events. It acts as a vital scouting ground for young talents, with many players advancing to represent their provinces in national and international competitions.

The success of the Abanse Negrense – NBTC Local Qualifying Tournament reflects the provincial government’s dedication to fostering a robust sports ecosystem. With plans to expand its youth sports initiatives, Negros Occidental is positioning itself as a leader in promoting athletic excellence and holistic development for its young population.

As the tournament concluded, it left an indelible mark on the athletes, their families, and the community, reaffirming the power of sports to unite and inspire. Looking ahead, the winners will carry the province’s hopes as they compete in regional and national NBTC tournaments, embodying the spirit of Abanse Negrense.
