Zamboanga City gears pp for ‘Urban Poor Solidarity Week’

By Sam Ramos

Preparations are underway for the weeklong observance of Urban Poor Solidarity Week (UPSW), which will take place from December 1 to 8, with various activities aimed at highlighting the challenges and contributions of the city’s urban poor communities.

The Housing and Land Management Division (HLMD) of the City Mayor’s Office convened an inter-agency meeting on November 21 to finalize details for the celebration. The meeting, chaired by Executive Assistant Marissa Aizon, was attended by representatives from key city departments, the Zamboanga City Police Office, Task Force Zamboanga, the Philippine Red Cross-Zamboanga, and other stakeholders.

The event will commence on December 1 with a Solidarity Walk from the City Hall grounds to the Don Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex, followed by a short program. The week will feature various activities aimed at providing support and services to urban poor residents.

One of the highlights is a medical mission on December 5, to be held at the Philippine Red Cross-Zamboanga. Residents will have access to free medical and dental services, eye check-ups, haircuts, and a bloodletting activity. Concurrently, the Office of the City Veterinarian will administer free anti-rabies vaccinations, while the Office of the City Agriculturist will distribute vegetable seeds to promote urban farming.

The weeklong observance will culminate on December 8 with a Convention of Urban Poor Associations and Homeowners Association (UPA/HOA) Presidents and Leaders. The event is expected to provide an opportunity for networking, knowledge sharing, and fostering solidarity among leaders of the urban poor sector.

Urban Poor Solidarity Week is an annual nationwide celebration mandated by Proclamation No. 367, which underscores the government’s recognition of the vital role urban poor communities play in nation-building. Zamboanga City’s observance reflects a commitment to inclusivity and the empowerment of its marginalized sectors through multisectoral collaboration and support initiatives.
