Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano reaffirmed his firm stand that the West Philippine Sea belongs to the Philippines, stressing that his bloc’s position differs only in strategy, not in patriotism.
During his interpellation with Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan on Proposed Senate Resolution No. 256, Cayetano said: “Pareho tayo ng stand: Atin ang West Philippine Sea. Iba lang ang approach natin. We can discuss this soberly, secure our territory, and benefit from our rights without being ‘pro’ or ‘anti’ China.”
The resolution condemns recent statements by the Chinese embassy criticizing Philippine officials defending national sovereignty and maritime rights. Fifteen senators signed the measure, while Cayetano, Sen. Pia Cayetano, and seven other Minority members did not—drawing criticism from some sectors.
Cayetano clarified that there is no question about Philippine sovereignty and urged professionalism and decorum in addressing the issue. He cited controversial remarks and a caricature involving Chinese President Xi Jinping that triggered heated exchanges and the filing of the resolution.
He also decried efforts to politicize the matter, emphasizing that the Minority’s refusal to sign was based solely on differences in approach.
“We can love the Philippines, protect our territory, and uphold our 2016 UNCLOS arbitral victory. Magkakampi tayo,” he said, calling for unity and respectful discourse without labels such as “pro-China,” “anti-China,” or “Tsinador.”
The Senate later approved the resolution on third reading, with the Cayetanos not participating in its adoption.
