More than 300 visual artists from across the Visayas converged in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental, for the first Visayas-wide painting competition, celebrating the region’s culture and resilience under the theme “Pagsibol sa Kabihasnang Pamumuhay” (Emergence of Civilized Life).
The event, held at Cadiz Arena, marked the first time the city extended its annual government-led art competition, initiated in 2019, to artists from across the Visayas. It is one of the highlights of the ongoing Dinagsa Festival 2025, which also commemorates the 50th anniversary of Cadiz’s version of the Ati-Atihan festival.
Cebuano artist Jayson Droña claimed the grand prize with his oil painting titled “Mga Kamay ng Pag-asa” (Hands of Hope), which depicts the unity and collective resilience of Visayan communities. The piece, created on a 26 x 32-inch canvas, earned Droña PHP200,000 and a trophy. His artwork features hands from various backgrounds holding symbols of Visayan heritage, including Cebu’s Sto. Niño and rosary, Bacolod’s Masskara Festival, Iloilo’s hablon fabric, and Bohol’s coconut shell cup.
“The hands in my painting symbolize every individual’s role in building a better tomorrow. Even in times of hardship, hope thrives when we come together,” said Droña, a licensed mechanical engineer from Danao City.
Hondrey Debalucos of Cebu claimed second place with a PHP100,000 prize, followed by Iloilo’s Paul Jhon Cabanalan in third with PHP50,000. Sagay City’s Matthew Henry Jusayan and Siquijor’s Marvin Lomosad placed fourth and fifth, receiving PHP40,000 and PHP30,000, respectively.
The competition was judged by an esteemed panel of artists, including Cid Reyes, Ron Lopez Davis, Dopy Doplon, Otto Neri, Aladin Antiqueño, Emmanuel Garibay, and Isabel Diaz.
“Art unites us,” said Mayor Salvador Escalante Jr. “It was not easy to gather everyone, but we succeeded in creating an event that showcases the talent, culture, and traditions of our region.”
The Dinagsa Festival 2025 will culminate on Sunday, closing a week of festivities celebrating Cadiz’s rich cultural heritage.
