The Visayas Command (Viscom) awarded a Military Working Dog Achievement Medal to “Itum,” a local Aspin breed tracking dog, for its significant contributions during combat operations in Negros Occidental. The medal was conferred by Lt. Gen. Fernando Reyeg, Viscom chief, during a ceremony on December 1.

Itum played a critical role in a four-day pursuit operation conducted from November 21 to 24 in Barangay Gatuslao, Candoni. The operation targeted members of the New People’s Army (NPA) and resulted in the neutralization of eight rebels, the recovery of eight high-powered firearms, and various war materials.

Reyeg praised Itum’s keen senses and dedication, which led to the discovery of an NPA member’s corpse and a firearm. “Today, we not only honor our brave soldiers but also recognize the invaluable contributions of our K9 partners. Itum’s exceptional performance exemplifies the critical role that our K9 partners play in ensuring mission success,” he said.

The operation highlighted the effectiveness of human and canine collaboration in military pursuits, with Itum’s tracking skills playing a vital part in locating withdrawing NPA members and advancing the mission’s success.

In addition to recognizing Itum, Viscom also awarded 14 personnel from the 47th and 15th Infantry Battalions for their heroism during the operation. The commendations underscore the dedication and bravery of the individuals and teams involved in securing peace and stability in the region.
