UST rallies to beat UE, sweeps Super League Pool B; NU scores

MANILA – University of Santo Tomas turned back University of the East, 23-25, 23-25, 25-14, 25-17, 15-9, to sweep the four-match Pool B in the 2024 Shakey’s Super League (SSL) Collegiate Pre-Season Championship at Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila late Sunday.

Winger Angeline Poyos scored a game-high 28 points, including eight in the fifth set, as the Tigresses snapped the Lady Warriors’ three-game run.

“We stuck to the system and listened to the instructions of our coaches,” said Poyos after the two-hour and 27-minute match.

Regina Grace Jurado chipped in 14 attacks and one ace while Jonna Chris Perdido added 14 points on 10 attacks, three blocks and one ace.

UST will face Far Eastern University and the second ranked teams in Pool A and C in another round-robin play.

UE (3-1), on the other hand, will meet De La Salle University, the No. 1 seed in Pool A and No. 2 seed in Pool D in the next round.

Meanwhile, National University defeated San Beda University, 25-19, 25-7, 25-17, for its third win in Pool A.

Myrtle Escanlar had 13 points on 11 attacks, one block and an ace while Alyssa Solomon contributed 12 points.

San Beda, which absorbed its third loss in four outings, was paced by Angel Habacon with 11 points on nine kills and two aces.

Games will resume Wednesday with Lyceum of the Philippines University (1-2) taking on University of Perpetual Help System Dalta (0-2) at 1 p.m. in Pool B; Ateneo de Manila University (2-1) squaring off with Emilio Aguinaldo College (0-3) at 3:30 p.m. in Pool B; and Adamson University (1-1) battling College of Saint Benilde (0-1) at 6 p.m. in Pool B. (PNA)
