The newly inaugurated Panguil Bay Bridge has significantly boosted tourism in Misamis Occidental, with a reported 216% increase in visitor numbers. Governor Henry Oaminal Sr. revealed the development during the recent Northern Mindanao Regional Development Council (RDC) meeting in Oroquieta City.
In the first weekend following the bridge’s opening, the province recorded 2,119 tourists, a sharp rise from the previous weekly average of 670. The surge is attributed to the improved accessibility provided by the 3.77-kilometer bridge, which connects Tangub City in Misamis Occidental to Tubod in Lanao del Norte.
The Panguil Bay Bridge, completed in late 2023, is the longest bridge in Northern Mindanao. It is a key infrastructure project under the government’s “Build, Build, Build” program, aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and supporting local economies. Before its construction, travel across Panguil Bay relied on ferries, which were slower and less reliable.
The bridge has also reduced travel time and costs for residents and businesses, creating new opportunities for trade and tourism. Local leaders hope it will stimulate economic growth and enhance the region’s competitiveness.
Historically, Panguil Bay has served as a vital waterway for trade and transportation. The bridge’s completion marks a turning point in the area’s development, transitioning from dependence on ferries to modern road infrastructure.
Tourism officials in Misamis Occidental have announced plans to further capitalize on the increased visitor traffic. Initiatives include improving amenities, promoting cultural heritage sites, and enhancing natural attractions to sustain the province’s tourism growth.
