Taguig City develops as ‘Fur-tropolis’ for pet-loving residents

By Sunday Punch

Pet owners in Metro Manila are turning to Taguig as a top destination to enjoy the urban environment alongside their furry companions, as local establishments and public spaces adapt to a growing demand for pet-friendly services.

A notable shift has occurred in the Philippines and the broader Asian region in recent years, with millennials and Gen Z increasingly embracing pet ownership. According to data from Australian-based Petraveller, about 67 percent of Filipinos are dog owners, reflecting a nationwide trend toward more pet-inclusive living.

Taguig has stood out by welcoming pets in its shopping centers, such as SM Aura, Mitsukoshi Mall, Uptown Mall, and One Bonifacio High Street. These sites allow owners to bring their pets while they shop or dine, provided they follow the mall’s guidelines. Local businesses note that these policies cater to a growing market of pet owners who seek convenient and inclusive experiences.

The city also offers various outdoor spaces where pets can exercise and socialize. Burgos Circle and Terra 28th Park serve as popular stops for dog walkers and their companions, while Central Bark BGC is a dedicated off-leash dog park where canines can interact in a controlled environment.

The Taguig local government has supported these developments through ordinances and collaborative projects aimed at promoting responsible pet ownership. City officials have reminded the public about the importance of supervision, waste disposal, and adherence to establishment rules.

Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, a Taguig native and former city representative, noted the broader impact of these changes, saying in a social media post, “Paunti-unti, nagiging mas pet-friendly na ang Pilipinas!” (Little by little, the Philippines is becoming more pet-friendly.) He encouraged policymakers and community leaders to further support pet welfare and integrate these practices in urban planning.

Traditionally, Metro Manila offered limited pet-friendly facilities, with many public areas restricting animal access. In recent years, however, local governments have begun to recognize the economic and social benefits of accommodating pet owners, adopting policies and guidelines to make parks, commercial spaces, and transport options more inclusive.

Cities such as Pasig, Quezon City, and Muntinlupa have also introduced pet ordinances, but Taguig’s comprehensive approach—combining private-sector collaboration, designated public spaces, and well-publicized guidelines—has garnered attention and praise from residents.

Experts observe that these initiatives align with an international trend, as cities worldwide transform into hubs for pet-inclusive lifestyles. The shift reflects changing attitudes toward animal welfare, public health, and the desire of younger generations to integrate pets into their daily routines.

Despite welcoming policies, city officials stress the necessity of responsible pet care. They advise owners to monitor pets closely, particularly in crowded areas, and to comply with each establishment’s rules. Veterinary organizations also remind owners to keep animals vaccinated and to manage their pets’ behavior in shared spaces.

With Taguig’s pet-friendly environment steadily expanding, the local government anticipates ongoing collaborations with private partners and advocates. City officials believe that continued efforts will strengthen Taguig’s reputation as a leader in urban pet-friendliness, serving as a model for other localities aiming to balance modernization with animal welfare and public convenience.
