Taal Volcano logs phreatic explosion – OCD

MANILA – The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said Taal Volcano erupted early Tuesday morning.

“Naganap ang steam-driven or phreatic na pagputok sa Bulkang Taal patungo sa timog-kanluran dakong 5:58 ng umaga (A steam-driven or phreatic eruption occurred at Taal Volcano towards the southwest direction at 5:58 a.m.),” the OCD-Calabarzon said in its Facebook post.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) also notified the public through short message service or SMS, advising them to wait for the next advisories.

A minor phreatic eruption event, which lasted for six minutes, was likewise reported in Taal Volcano on November 30, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Phreatic eruptions are steam-driven explosions that occur when water beneath the ground or on the surface is heated by magma, lava, hot rocks, or new volcanic deposits. (PNA)
