The Cebu City Government is exploring the possibility of establishing a Senior Citizens’ Center at the South Road Properties (SRP). Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia suggested that the SRP, a 300-hectare reclaimed area, could be an ideal location for the facility due to its available open spaces.
The proposal for the center, introduced by Councilor Pastor Alcover Jr., aims to create a dedicated space for senior citizens that will integrate recreation, health, education, and social services. This initiative takes inspiration from similar facilities in Moalboal, Cebu, and Tagum City, Davao, and is part of the city’s efforts to make it more senior-citizen-friendly.
Although the plan has garnered support from various council members, including Councilors Jocelyn Pesquera and Rey Gealon, it has yet to be included in the 2025 budget. Councilors are now reviewing the investment plan to ensure the center’s inclusion. There is also a suggestion to build a dedicated hospital for seniors as part of the initiative.
This proposal aligns with Republic Act 7876, which mandates that every city and municipality in the Philippines should have a senior citizens’ center under the supervision of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
