Smart eyes 5G expansion to fuel growth in 2025

MANILA – Mobile service provider Smart Communications (Smart) is looking to focus on expanding its 5G network to fuel revenue growth in 2025.

In a statement on Tuesday, Smart chief operating officer Anastacio Martirez said seamless coverage and customer satisfaction would be the company’s focus, on top of network rollout.

“By harnessing the power of 5G and expanding 5G city-by-city, we at Smart are committed to delivering the world-class experiences that Filipinos truly deserve,” Martirez said.

He said Smart recently rolled out 5G coverage in major event venues such as the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Philippine Arena in Bulacan, and Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

“Smart has also rolled out new sites in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig, as well as launched affordable devices under PHP5,000 including the Smart ZTE A75 5G and TNT Panalo Phone 5G to make 5G more accessible,” he said.

These initiatives, he added, continue to drive the segment’s growth, with mobile data revenues — accounting for 89 percent of total individual wireless revenues– growing by 5 percent to PHP55.2 billion in the first nine months of 2024.

“Active data users stood at 41.2 million, while mobile data traffic increased by 10 percent year-on-year, primarily supported by the rollout of new sites and capacity expansion of existing LTE sites,” he said.

Some of the drivers for the increase in Smart’s data traffic include its mobile data offers including Power All, All Access, Doble Data, and Smart Postpaid’s new channel exclusive plans.

“The PLDT Group’s continued investments in enhancing its integrated network, including its robust 5G infrastructure, is aligned with the group’s commitment to deliver leveled-up customer experience across the country,” he said.

To date, the Smart mobile network covers 97 percent of the country’s population and is integrated with PLDT’s fiber infrastructure. (PNA)
