Several UP Websites top Webometrics rankings for H2 of 2024

Two websites of the University of the Philippines (UP) have secured top spots in the Webometrics Rankings for the second half of 2024. The UP System website ranked second, while the UP Manila website took the sixth spot in the overall rankings.

De La Salle University Manila claimed the top position in the overall rankings, followed by Ateneo de Manila University in third, the University of Santo Tomas in fourth, and the Mapua Institute of Technology in fifth place.

Other UP System websites also made it to the top 100, including UP Visayas (24th), UP Mindanao (50th), UP Cebu (57th), UP Diliman (58th), and UP Baguio (61st). The Webometrics Rankings of World Universities are conducted by the Cybermetrics Lab of Spain, with rankings released twice a year, in January and July.

The rankings evaluate websites based on factors such as the volume of content, visibility of research materials, and the impact of educational resources, particularly how these are linked to other research institutions and works online.

In the category of Impact, the UP System led the country’s universities, securing the top spot, followed by Ateneo de Manila University in second and De La Salle University Manila in third. The University of Santo Tomas and the University of San Carlos followed in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Among UP’s constituent universities, UP Manila ranked sixth in the Impact category, with UP Visayas securing the 37th spot, UP Mindanao at 43rd, UP Baguio at 58th, and UP Cebu at 89th. UP Diliman placed 364th in this category.

In terms of Openness, the UP System website again led the rankings, followed by De La Salle University Manila in second and UP Diliman in third. The University of Santo Tomas and Ateneo de Manila University completed the top five.

Other UP units featured in the Openness category, with UP Visayas ranked 133rd, UP Mindanao 136th, UP Manila 157th, UP Cebu 262nd, and UP Baguio at 352nd.

In the Excellence category, UP Diliman took the top spot among Philippine universities, followed by De La Salle University Manila in second, UP Manila in third, Ateneo de Manila University in fourth, and the University of Santo Tomas in fifth.

The UP System website ranked sixth in this category, with UP Visayas in 12th, UP Cebu in 29th, UP Mindanao in 30th, and UP Baguio in 50th.

Webometrics is regarded as the largest independent, objective, and open scientific global academic ranking system for higher education institutions. Unlike other ranking methodologies, Webometrics uses link analysis to assess the impact of universities, which is considered a more reliable measure than citation analysis or global surveys.

The Webometrics Rankings have been conducted by the Cybermetrics Lab of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) since 2004. The rankings aim to promote “academic web presence” and support Open Access initiatives in research and knowledge-sharing.

The CSIC, founded in 1939, is the largest public research institution in Spain and the third largest in Europe. It operates under Spain’s Ministry of Education and aims to promote scientific research and collaboration with other countries.
