The 79th Infantry (Masaligan) Battalion of the Philippine Army and the Sagay City Local Government Unit (LGU) marked Indigenous Peoples (IP) Day with a vibrant celebration on November 29, 2024, in Barangay Puey. The event highlighted the rich culture, traditions, and contributions of the Ata community, a prominent indigenous group in the Negros Island Region.
Christopher Brillantes, chieftain of the Ata community, opened the program with a presentation showcasing the tribe’s cultural heritage. He also introduced the Ata Youth initiative, a program designed to preserve and pass on Ata traditions to future generations.
The celebration featured cultural performances, including traditional dances such as the Tinagong Dance, a courtship ritual unique to the Ata tribe. Attendees also observed demonstrations of traditional hunting methods and the use of indigenous cooking utensils. Locally crafted items and culinary products were showcased, giving visitors a closer look at the Ata community’s creativity and resourcefulness.
The event underscored the Ata people’s sustainable practices and their role in environmental conservation. Traditional farming and hunting methods, integral to their way of life, contribute to maintaining the ecological balance in Negros Occidental.
This collaboration between the Philippine Army, Sagay City LGU, and the Ata community aimed to strengthen ties and promote cultural preservation. Initiatives such as the Ata Youth program reflect ongoing efforts to protect the cultural identity of indigenous peoples amid modern challenges.
Indigenous Peoples Day serves as a platform to honor the history and contributions of indigenous communities across the Philippines while addressing issues such as land rights and social inclusion.
