Health officials have advised residents in Maguindanao del Norte to avoid consuming sea turtle meat after a food poisoning incident in Barangay Linao, Datu Blah Sinsuat, left three people dead and 35 others hospitalized.
According to Dr. Ariff Baguindali, head of the Maguindanao del Sur Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO), members of the Teduray community fell ill on November 26 after eating a cooked sea turtle, locally known as “pawikan.” The victims reported symptoms consistent with food poisoning shortly after the meal.
Of the 35 individuals who were hospitalized, all but one have since been discharged, while health workers continue to monitor the condition of the remaining patient. Dr. Baguindali emphasized the importance of avoiding improperly cleaned seafood and ensuring food safety practices to prevent similar incidents.
The three fatalities were buried immediately following local customs. Their identities have been withheld at the request of their families.
Barangay Linao, a coastal community reliant on fishing, frequently consumes marine species from nearby waters. Authorities are now raising awareness about the potential risks of consuming certain marine animals, particularly endangered species like sea turtles.
Sea turtles are classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Health officials reminded the public that these animals are protected under international conservation efforts, underscoring the need to prioritize both human safety and environmental preservation.
