Region 8 honors disaster responders with ‘Heroes Welcome’ ceremony

A “Heroes Welcome” ceremony was held on November 4, 2024, at Camp Sec Ruperto K Kangleon to honor the Region 8 Disaster Response Deployment Contingents, recently returned from their support efforts in the Bicol Region. City Mayor Lucy Torres Gomez and 4th District Representative Richard Gomez led the event, paying tribute to the bravery and dedication of the first responders.

Local leaders, dignitaries, and community members gathered to recognize the efforts of these front-line disaster responders. Mayor Gomez commended their courage and highlighted their critical role in saving lives, especially in a country vulnerable to frequent natural disasters.

Congressman Richard Gomez emphasized the need for enhanced disaster preparedness measures, noting the importance of proactive strategies in managing disaster risks. With the Philippines experiencing an average of 20 typhoons annually, along with other natural hazards, he underscored the importance of continued advancements in readiness and response.

Key officials from various government agencies attended, including SP Member Gregorio Yrastorza III, Deputy Regional Director for Administration PBGEN Salvador Alacyang, and regional heads from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). Coast Guard District Eastern Visayas Commander Romeo Pulido Jr. and 8th ID Philippine Army Commander BGEN Perfecto Peñaredondo reiterated their commitment to support communities during emergencies, underscoring the importance of inter-agency cooperation in effective disaster response.

As the ceremony concluded, the atmosphere reflected optimism and determination. Local leaders highlighted the importance of education and training in disaster preparedness, empowering residents to take proactive steps in safeguarding their families and property.

The “Heroes Welcome” not only honored the responders but also served as a reminder of the ongoing commitment to disaster risk reduction and community resilience. Local officials reaffirmed their dedication to supporting first responders and fostering a culture of preparedness, critical in ensuring communities can recover swiftly in the face of natural disasters.
