Rediscovering Manila’s rich heritage through Xiao Chua’s Rizal Park tour

Manila, the vibrant heart of the Philippines, has long been a magnet for both local and international visitors. From the iconic Walled City of Intramuros to the expansive Rizal Park, also known as Luneta, the city offers a deep dive into the nation’s history. For many, these landmarks are synonymous with sightseeing, family outings, or even fitness activities. However, behind the leisurely walks and scenic photos, Manila’s storied past often remains untold.

In 2023, the City of Manila recorded a staggering influx of over 14 million tourists, according to the Department of Tourism, Culture, and Arts of Manila. This impressive figure doesn’t even account for visitors from hotels, restaurants, and the Philippine Ports Authority. While many travelers come to relax, stroll, or snap photos for social media, they may be unaware of the rich history these locations hold—stories that could add depth and meaning to their visit.

Enter Dr. Xiao Chua, one of the country’s most renowned public historians. Recognizing the potential to engage visitors on a deeper level, Chua began offering free historical walking tours in Rizal Park, in collaboration with the National Parks Development Committee (NPDC). These tours have delighted both history enthusiasts and casual tourists alike, turning a simple walk in the park into a fascinating journey through time.

Initially, these tours followed a consistent format, which caused a dip in returning participants over time. The NPDC responded by transforming the tours into a monthly event in 2024, each with a unique theme tied to significant historical events or celebrations occurring in that month. This refreshing approach has not only drawn in first-time visitors but also encouraged past participants to return for new stories and insights.

For example, the February tour focused on the theme of love, showcasing historical narratives about various forms of affection in Philippine history. In March, the tour delved into the country’s religious heritage, exploring the intersections of faith and culture. Each month offers a new perspective on the nation’s history, making every visit to Rizal Park an opportunity for discovery.
