MANILA – The number of rabies cases nationwide increased by 23 percent or a total of 354 from Jan. 1 to Sept. 14, the Department of Health (DOH) said Friday.
The total was higher than the 287 cases logged during the same period in 2023.
Data also showed that in August, an increase in rabies cases was observed in the National Capital Region, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Bicol Region, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region and Soccsksargen.
Rabies is preventable through vaccination of pets and persons.
Individuals bitten by animals should seek immediate medical attention and if necessary, have post-exposure prophylaxis to prevent rabies infection.
Earlier, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said that PHP110 million is needed to vaccinate around 22 million dogs and cats.(PNA)
